A Rich History and Founding
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church was established in 1948 by the Congregation of the Resurrection, a religious community dedicated to the mission of resurrecting faith and society through their ministry. The founding of our parish was spearheaded by Fr. Joseph Martin Baker, C.R., who played a pivotal role in its development. Despite the challenges of material shortages following World War II, Fr. Baker and the parish community worked tirelessly to construct the church, rectory, and parish hall using salvaged materials and volunteer labor.
The formal dedication of the church, rectory, and parish hall took place on Palm Sunday, March 29, 1953, by the Most Reverend Thomas Toolen, D.D., Bishop of the Mobile-Birmingham Diocese. Since then, St. John the Evangelist has grown and flourished, becoming a spiritual home for countless families and individuals in the area.
